Wike’s Rainbow Coalition Sparks Rift Among APC Governors Ahead of 2027
A dispute over FCT Minister Nyesom Wike’s proposed Rainbow Coalition has opened divisions among APC governors ahead of the 2027 general elections. Wike says the arrangement would support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election while allowing flexible alliances in governorship and National Assembly contests. The Progressive Governors’ Forum, led by Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, has rejected the proposal. Its members insist that APC governors should support only candidates produced through the party’s official structures. They argue that parallel alliances could weaken grassroots mobilisation and confuse voters. Wike, who remains a PDP member while serving in the Tinubu administration, says the coalition is a pro-Tinubu project and not a threat to the APC. Some governors are reportedly backing the party-discipline position, while others are said to be waiting for Tinubu’s intervention before taking a public stand. The disagreement could test the ruling party’s unity as preparations for the 2027 elections gather pace. Party leaders are reportedly working to resolve the dispute internally.
