Australian ‘ISIS Bride’ and Mother Charged in Yazidi Teen’s Enslavement and Rape
Zeinab Ahmad and her mother, Kawsar Ahmad, have been charged with crimes against humanity for allegedly helping to buy and abuse a 15-year-old Yazidi girl in ISIS-controlled Syria. Court documents in Melbourne allege the teenager was forced into domestic servitude and repeatedly raped by her father. Prosecutors say Zeinab, who abandoned nursing studies in Melbourne to join ISIS in 2014, watched her father and mother beat and mistreat the girl after purchasing her for about £7,500 in Raqqa. Although Zeinab did not carry out physical assaults herself, she threatened the victim and ordered her to perform household chores. Both women were arrested upon returning to Australia and face multiple counts of enslavement and use of a slave, each punishable by up to 25 years in prison. The hearing continues on June 5, with federal police opposing bail over concerns Zeinab may still support Islamic State.
