Henry Samueli is an American engineer, billionaire and co-founder of semiconductor company Broadcom. Born in Buffalo, New York, in 1954, he earned his bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees in electrical engineering from UCLA. In 1991, Samueli and his former doctoral student, Henry Nicholas, started Broadcom with $5,000. The company later became a major global semiconductor business. Samueli remains Broadcom’s chairman and is also a UCLA professor on leave. Samueli and his wife, Susan, bought the Anaheim Ducks hockey team in 2005. The team won the Stanley Cup in 2007. He has also received several engineering honours and is named on dozens of United States patents. His wealth is largely tied to his Broadcom holdings, with recent estimates placing his net worth at about $33.8 billion. His career has also included a stock-options backdating investigation in the 2000s, during which he admitted making a false statement to regulators.
