Mixta Africa Calls for Coordinated Reforms to Address Nigeria’s 30 Million-Unit Housing Gap
Mixta Africa has called for a coordinated housing delivery system that tackles supply, affordability and developers’ capacity, saying isolated mortgage interventions cannot solve Nigeria’s housing challenge at scale. Speaking at a housing summit in Lagos, the company’s Group Chief Commercial Officer, Tola Akinsulire, said governments must combine affordable land, infrastructure support, tax incentives and buyer-friendly financing. He cited Morocco’s housing programme, where incentives for developers and homebuyers helped deliver thousands of homes. Industry stakeholders estimated Nigeria’s housing challenge at about 30 million units, including an estimated 15 million-unit deficit and millions of structurally inadequate homes. They also called for transparent public-private partnerships, better land processes, build-to-rent schemes and technology that can reduce costs, approval delays and construction risks. They said improving access to mortgages without increasing the supply of homes would not resolve the crisis, especially as many households cannot afford homeownership under current economic conditions.
