Counting Kidnapped Students Isn’t Enough: Nigeria Must Protect Its Schools
Armed gangs have abducted over 80 children in Oyo and Borno States, some as young as two. Attacks in both the insurgency-hit North-East and the relatively calmer South-West expose the failure to safeguard our schools. These mass kidnappings no longer spark sustained outrage. We issue statements, launch rescue missions and move on. Meanwhile, parents grow fearful and many children risk being withdrawn from school. Nigeria needs a comprehensive school protection strategy backed by funding, technology and community collaboration. We must secure perimeters, improve intelligence and hold kidnappers to account. Our classrooms deserve more than counted statistics – they deserve real protection.
