Ikpeazu Presents Credentials to Spain’s King Felipe VI, Explains Ambassadorial Protocol
Nigeria’s ambassador to Spain, Okezie Victor Ikpeazu, formally presented his letters of credence to King Felipe VI at the Royal Palace in Madrid on 14 September 2026. The ceremony officially begins an ambassador’s tenure in the host country. I have watched this process for decades, and it is not unusual for ambassadors to wait months before presenting their credentials. Heads of state work to tight schedules, so credential ceremonies are often planned well in advance and held in batches. In Nigeria, a new ambassador is received by protocol officials, honours are observed, and the ambassador presents a letter from their head of state to the President. They then hold a brief meeting, take photographs and complete other formalities. Delays in these ceremonies do not necessarily mean an ambassador has been rejected by the host country.
