Atiku Fires Back at Tinubu Over Fuel Subsidy, Economic Policies
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has criticised President Bola Tinubu’s economic policies after Tinubu described Atiku’s proposal to restore fuel subsidy as economically ignorant. Tinubu, while hosting Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, said returning to subsidy would show a poor understanding of governance and the economy. Atiku responded through his media aide, arguing that the removal of fuel subsidy and exchange-rate reforms worsened inflation, transport costs and household hardship. Atiku said his proposal is not a return to an open-ended subsidy regime. He described it as a targeted, capped and independently audited support mechanism tied to domestic petroleum production. He also questioned reported energy-security costs and petroleum under-recoveries in NNPC accounts, arguing that Nigerians still bear opaque fuel-related costs despite the subsidy removal.
