Zulum Says Scavengers Stole ₦3bn Power Line Wires in Borno
Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum says metal scavengers stole electricity distribution wires from the Damaturu–Maiduguri power line project, which cost more than ₦3 billion. He said the losses, along with security concerns, led the state government to ban scrap-metal trading. According to Zulum, intelligence reports also suggest that insurgents use scrap-metal channels to sell looted materials. The governor said the restriction is meant to protect public infrastructure and residents, not destroy livelihoods. He urged scrap dealers to propose safer ways to operate and said genuine operators may evacuate materials collected before the ban from approved locations.
