Ex-Lawmaker Urges Rivers Legislators to Address PHED Blackouts in Port Harcourt
Former federal lawmaker Lasbry Amadi has urged Rivers State and National Assembly lawmakers representing Port Harcourt to intervene over persistent blackouts, transformer shortages and poor service attributed to the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company. Speaking at Port Harcourt City LGA chairman Allwell Ihunda’s first-year anniversary, Amadi said residents and businesses have endured unreliable electricity for too long. He called for legislative and regulatory action to ensure PHED meets its obligations to consumers. Residents have also raised complaints about estimated bills, meter failures, delayed fault repairs, power surges, disconnections and alleged unofficial charges. Amadi said these claims should be transparently investigated, while service standards, metering and consumer protection are strengthened. The event included the distribution of six transformers to communities and education grants to students. Amadi said the intervention highlights the need for stronger accountability from the electricity distributor and relevant authorities.
