Questions Raised Over Alleged Applause for Religious Slurs at Kano Event
A reported incident involving Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has raised concern over religious tolerance and responsible leadership. Christians were allegedly described as “minorities” and “infidels” at an event attended by the governor. The governor was also reported to have laughed and applauded, although the circumstances and full context should be independently verified. Kano belongs to Muslims, Christians and Nigerians of every faith. Leaders should reject language that can deepen division and should defend the dignity, safety and equal citizenship of all residents. If the remarks and reaction are accurately reported, Nigerians are right to ask what the governor was applauding and whether he condemns religiously divisive rhetoric.
