Awka Man Jailed for Vandalising Telecom Infrastructure
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps in Anambra State has secured the conviction of Obika Sopuruchukwu for vandalising telecommunications infrastructure in Awka. He was arrested on September 9, 2026, at Emma Nnaemeka Street while allegedly attempting to steal an integrated power transformer/generator with an accomplice who escaped. The NSCDC said cables were cut and bolts loosened at the installation. The Magistrate Court in Awka found him guilty after he pleaded guilty to conspiracy and vandalism of critical national assets. He was sentenced to one month on each count, to run consecutively, at the Amawbia Correctional Centre. The NSCDC urged residents to report suspicious activity around public and private infrastructure.
