Lagos Aims to Scrap Power Bands and Deliver 24-Hour Supply
The Lagos State Government plans to phase out the electricity banding system introduced by NERC in April 2024. The state now oversees its own market and wants all homes to enjoy stable, continuous power rather than limited hours based on subsidy tiers. At a recent Alausa briefing, the Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources said the governor has challenged the agency to eliminate banding and achieve 24-hour supply. The state will stop subsidising and charge consumers the real cost of electricity as directed by the leadership. Lagos has boosted infrastructure and clean energy projects. It has rolled out 42,000 smart solar streetlights, installed lithium-ion storage in schools and clinics, and upgraded transformers at Gbagada General Hospital to deliver over 20 hours of daily power.
