Fuel Subsidy Removal: Nigeria Must Demand More Than Cheaper Petrol

I believe the claim that fuel subsidy removal has brought Nigerians no benefit ignores the wider effects of the policy. Since the removal, governments have received higher allocations, while investment in refineries, oil fields and energy infrastructure has increased. Nigerians should demand accountability from state governments over how these additional funds are spent. Subsidy removal has also reduced recurring fuel shortages and the uncertainty that once disrupted movement, trade and daily life. Investors are more likely to commit funds to an energy sector where prices are clearer and less dependent on an unsustainable subsidy system. We have paid a painful price for this reform, but returning to fuel subsidy would risk sacrificing long-term progress for short-term political promises. Nigerians deserve affordable energy, but we also deserve reliable infrastructure, healthcare, security and stronger social safety nets. Public money should serve Nigerians, not fund cheap fuel across the region.
