Why Tinubu’s Media Strategy Looks Too Reactive
I have no horse in Nigeria’s political race, but I have followed politics closely and believe President Bola Tinubu’s media strategy deserves scrutiny. His team appears to wait for Peter Obi, Atiku Abubakar and other critics to speak before responding, rather than setting the public agenda with clear and regular communication. In my view, this counter-punching approach is too defensive for a government facing intense public concern over the economy, fuel prices and daily living costs. The administration has issued polished statements and highlighted some figures, including foreign-reserve improvements and ongoing projects, but these messages often do not connect with citizens or address difficult questions directly. Tinubu’s limited media engagements have also left space for opponents and online commentators to define the conversation. His defenders sometimes turn debates into attacks on journalists instead of answering the issues raised. If the administration loses public confidence, its media team may share responsibility, even if the government records electoral success.
