Ex-IMF Official Backs Oyedele’s Reform Push, Calls for Accountability
Former IMF and World Bank official Dr. Ifediora Amobi has backed Taiwo Oyedele’s tax and fiscal reform efforts, saying they are important to Nigeria’s long-term fiscal sustainability. Amobi said the government must sustain reforms such as petrol subsidy removal, foreign exchange liberalisation and tax changes. He also urged authorities to ensure that higher public revenues lead to better services and support for vulnerable households. Figures attributed to the government show that ₦15.8 trillion accrued to the Federation Account from subsidy-removal proceeds between June 2023 and December 2025. The Federal Government received ₦5.4 trillion, while states and local governments received ₦10.4 trillion. The reforms remain controversial because of inflation, rising living costs and pressure on households and businesses. Amobi said accountability, policy consistency and a better investment climate are needed for Nigerians to see tangible benefits.
