Chadian Airstrikes in Lake Chad Leave Over 40 Nigerian Fishermen Missing
Chadian fighter jets bombed islands in Lake Chad over the weekend. At least 40 Nigerian fishermen are now missing and feared dead after two islands, believed to be controlled by Boko Haram, were targeted. Sources from a civilian militia and a local fishermen’s union say the strikes hit Shuwa Island and nearby areas. Many victims had paid Boko Haram “taxes” for access to rich fishing grounds and were ferried by the militants to these waters. There has been no official response from Chad’s military. The operation follows recent Boko Haram attacks on Chadian troops and echoes a similar incident in October 2024, when dozens of Nigerian fishermen were killed during raids on Tilma Island.
