Africa Needs Trade, Not Aid, Says Nigeria’s UN Representative

Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Jimoh Ibrahim, says Africa should pursue trade, investment and equal partnerships rather than rely on foreign aid. Speaking at a reception for Ahunna Eziakonwa, the newly appointed Senior Adviser on Africa to the UN Secretary-General, Ibrahim said African countries must protect their sovereignty while building human and material development through cooperation. He also renewed the call for permanent African representation on the UN Security Council, arguing that the continent’s population and security challenges justify a stronger voice in global decision-making. Eziakonwa credited Nigeria for shaping her career and pledged to continue advocating for Africa at the UN.
