Nigeria Wins UN Human Rights Council Seat for 2027–2029
Nigeria has been elected to the United Nations Human Rights Council for the 2027–2029 term after receiving 172 of the 181 votes cast by the UN General Assembly on October 13, 2026. Nigeria will occupy one of Africa’s four seats alongside Zambia, Ghana and Burundi. Its term begins on January 1, 2027, and ends on December 31, 2029. The 47-member council promotes and protects human rights globally, investigates violations and reviews member states’ human-rights records. Although the Federal Government called the vote a sign of international confidence, rights groups noted that the African contest was uncontested. Nigeria’s new role is likely to increase scrutiny of its record on security, civic freedoms, justice and accountability at home.
