Calls for Probe of Ogun Electoral Officers’ Alleged Payments and Voter-Data Misuse

Calls have intensified for the removal of Akeem Ade Balogun from his coordinating role among Electoral Officers in Ogun State, pending an independent investigation into alleged payments to election officials. The allegations claim that some Electoral Officers received ₦500,000 monthly, while Assistant Electoral Officers received ₦150,000. The payments are alleged to have started in July, with arrears recently settled. There are also claims that vehicles were promised to some officials. The claims are linked to people reportedly associated with Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola. Separately, Abeokuta South residents have reported calls from people who allegedly said they obtained their details from INEC. This has raised concerns about the possible unauthorised use of voter information. No evidence has been provided to establish the allegations, and no one should be presumed guilty. However, INEC should urgently clarify the claims and investigate any conduct that could undermine public confidence in electoral neutrality.
