Atiku Urges Tinubu to Raise Minimum Wage as Living Costs Climb

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has urged President Bola Tinubu to approve a substantial increase in Nigeria’s minimum wage, arguing that the current ₦70,000 monthly floor has been eroded by rising living costs. He backed organised labour’s demand for a review, citing higher prices for fuel, transport, food, rent and electricity. Atiku said that at about ₦1,400 per litre, ₦70,000 would buy only 50 litres of petrol, leaving little for other household needs. He compared this with April 2023, when the former ₦30,000 minimum wage could buy about 118 litres at an average petrol price of ₦254.06 per litre. He also cited minimum-wage figures from other African oil-producing countries while calling for pay that better reflects workers’ purchasing power.
