Umahi Threatens Action Against Benin-Asaba Highway Concessionaire Over Road Damage

Umahi Threatens Action Against Benin-Asaba Highway Concessionaire Over Road Damage

Works Minister David Umahi has threatened action against the Benin-Asaba Expressway Concession Company over the worsening condition of the Benin-Asaba highway. During an inspection in Benin City, he accused the firm of removing existing asphalt without approval and without first providing adequate drainage. Umahi said the ministry had repeatedly warned against stripping the road surface, arguing that the work had left motorists stranded for days on failed sections. He also accepted responsibility for the ministry’s oversight and questioned the concessionaire’s technical capacity to handle a major highway project. The road was concessioned in 2025 for conversion into a 10-lane expressway. The company’s CEO blamed heavy rainfall, traffic pressure and the need to reopen sections before materials had fully cured. Lawmakers and project consultants called for a review of the agreement, while the minister said the route may require total reconstruction with concrete pavement.
