Two Anambra Men to Hang for Raping and Killing 17-Year-Old Girl
An Anambra State High Court has sentenced Elochukwu Belonwu and Chukwuebuka Ofokwu to death by hanging for conspiracy, rape and murder of 17-year-old Jennifer Anene. The victim, who was mentally impaired, was reported missing on November 25, 2020 by her grandfather. Three days later, the first defendant’s wife told the family she had witnessed them sexually assaulting the girl as she cried for help. A friend later brought the victim home unconscious. She was confirmed dead on arrival at the hospital. A postmortem showed bruises, vaginal tears and other signs of aggravated assault. Witness statements, investigation reports and photographic evidence were tendered, though the eyewitness declined to testify. Delivering judgment, Justice U. I. Ndigwe said the prosecution proved every count beyond reasonable doubt. He condemned the crime as a desecration of societal values and upheld the death sentences.
