Court Warns to Foreclose Sowore’s Defence Over Repeated Adjournments
The Federal High Court in Abuja has threatened to foreclose Omoyele Sowore’s defence in his defamation trial. The warning came after the DSS’s lead counsel applied to move against Sowore’s repeated adjournment requests. Justice Mohammed Umar pressed Sowore when no lawyer appeared for him despite his presence in court. Sowore explained his lead counsel was abroad and his junior counsel unavailable. He then asked for another adjournment, calling the case “serious” and in need of full legal support. The DSS lawyer argued this was the 11th adjournment by the defence, citing a subsisting order for day-to-day trial under the ACJA 2015. He urged the court to foreclose Sowore’s defence in the interest of justice. Justice Umar granted one final adjournment to July 22 but warned that failure to proceed then could end Sowore’s defence entirely.
