Nigeria Eyes $3.5bn Annual Government Cloud Market Through Local Data Hosting

Nigeria’s National Sovereign Cloud Initiative could create a government cloud-computing market worth $3.5 billion annually within five years, according to Digital Realty Nigeria CEO Ike Nnamani. He said only about 30 per cent of Nigeria’s roughly 1,000 government agencies currently use cloud services, with estimated annual spending of about $1 billion. Migrating more agencies to cloud platforms could significantly increase demand for local data centres, cloud providers and system integrators. The initiative, being developed with support from NITDA, aims to keep sensitive government data and critical digital services on Nigerian-based infrastructure. It is also expected to reduce reliance on foreign hosting, ease pressure on foreign exchange, create jobs and attract private investment. Nnamani said government would set standards and policies, while private firms provide the infrastructure. Proposed certification requirements are expected to ensure local providers meet security, reliability and service-quality standards.
