EU Pledges €20m for Reintegration of Former Boko Haram Fighters in Nigeria
The European Union has announced €20 million in support for the demobilisation, deradicalisation and reintegration of former Boko Haram fighters in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states. The funding is part of a wider €300 million EU support package for Nigeria. The package targets drivers of violent extremism in the North-East and North-West, including poverty, insecurity, poor access to education and climate-related pressures. EU Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Gautier Mignot, said the bloc will also launch two regional programmes. RAMPARTS will support the reintegration of ex-Boko Haram members in the North-East, while SECSTA will focus on security and stabilisation in the North-West and Central Africa. The EU said its interventions will include education for girls and out-of-school children, health services, economic support for displaced people, pastoral development and water management.
