Customs, Military and NSCDC Step Up Cooperation to Tackle Cross River Smuggling
The Nigeria Customs Service’s Cross River/Calabar Free Trade Zone/Akwa Ibom Area Command is strengthening cooperation with the Nigerian Army, Navy and NSCDC to combat smuggling and improve security. The effort followed a series of visits to security formations in Calabar on Wednesday, led by Acting Area Controller Deputy Comptroller Nkeiruka Nwala. The discussions focused on intelligence sharing, coordinated enforcement and clearer communication. Nwala said the region’s land and maritime routes made sustained cooperation essential to addressing smuggling and other security threats. The Army and Navy representatives expressed their readiness to work with Customs. The Navy also highlighted the value of joint operations in tackling maritime crimes, including piracy and oil theft. Customs said the engagements support its broader effort to strengthen collaboration with sister agencies.
