Hamzat’s Lagos Plan: Can It Cut Levies and Food Losses for Traders?
Obafemi Hamzat says he will tackle unauthorised levies, high food transport costs and losses from poor storage if elected governor of Lagos. His proposals include clearer state and local government charges, stronger enforcement against illegal collections, food logistics infrastructure and support for farmers. At an October town hall, Hamzat said businesses should know their approved charges and should not face repeated demands for money after making official payments. For the plan to work, traders would need verifiable fee lists, receipts and a reliable system for reporting illegal collectors. He has also proposed a 420-hectare food logistics hub, a cold-chain network and a ₦500 billion guarantee scheme for farmers. Better storage and distribution could reduce spoilage of tomatoes, vegetables, fish and other perishables, but the benefits will depend on access, operating costs, funding and implementation. Lagos already has food-market infrastructure, including the Idi-Oro agro-hub in Mushin. The key question for market women and traders is whether these plans will produce measurable cuts in illegal levies, stock losses and transport costs.
