Senate Moves to Make Valid ID Mandatory for Tenants in Abuja
The Senate has begun moves toward a law that would require prospective tenants in the Federal Capital Territory to present valid identification before renting apartments. Senate President Godswill Akpabio asked Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele to prepare a bill for consideration. Akpabio said landlords often rent properties to people without keeping reliable details about their identities, occupations or contact information. He argued that proper tenant records could help security agencies trace suspects after crimes, including human trafficking. The proposal may also cover shops and other commercial premises, with tenants expected to provide verifiable documents such as a driver’s licence, international passport or other recognised identification. The bill is still at the drafting stage and would have to pass the National Assembly before becoming law. If approved, the measure could place new duties on landlords and agents. It may also raise concerns about tenants’ privacy, the security of personal data and access to housing for people without readily available ID.
