When Government Projects Keep Missing Deadlines, Taxpayers Deserve Answers
When a public road, hospital, school, bridge or water project repeatedly misses its completion date, Nigerians are right to demand answers. Delays can result from inflation, funding gaps, land disputes, insecurity, design changes or technical challenges. But repeated extensions and unexplained cost increases require public scrutiny. Citizens should be able to ask: What was the original contract sum and completion date? How much has been paid? How much work has been completed? Why was the deadline moved, and who approved any extra funding or changes to the project? Unfinished projects impose real costs on communities. Bad roads raise transport and vehicle-maintenance expenses, delayed hospitals force patients to travel farther, and stalled water schemes leave residents dependent on private suppliers. Contractors and supervising agencies must both account for delays, because public money should deliver public results.
