Three FUTO Students Arrested Over Death of Fellow Undergrad
The Imo State Police Command says it has arrested three 500-level students of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri. They are accused of restraining and beating a 100-level Cyber Security student, Chinedu Christogonus, after he was alleged to have stolen N13,500. Christogonus was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre in Owerri but was confirmed dead by medical staff. Outrage over his death led some students to burn buildings and destroy property on campus. Police spokesperson Henry Okoye said the suspects—aged between 21 and 24—have been detained and evidence secured. Commissioner of Police Audu Bosso has ordered a transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department for a full probe. The command appealed for calm and assured that no one, regardless of status, would be shielded from the law if found culpable. Christogonus’s death has renewed concerns about jungle justice and the safety of students in Nigerian tertiary institutions.
