Sanusi Credits Tinubu’s Government for Economic Progress but Flags Communication Gaps
Emir of Kano Muhammadu Sanusi II says the Tinubu administration deserves credit for improvements in Nigeria’s economy, while stressing that major challenges remain. Speaking at the Oxford Global Think Tank conference on Tuesday, he pointed to economic growth, lower inflation, increased foreign reserves and export diversification as signs of progress. Sanusi said the economy grew by 4.48 per cent in the second quarter of 2026, compared with an average of 0.9 per cent under former President Muhammadu Buhari. He also cited a fall in inflation from about 30 per cent to 14.6 per cent and foreign reserves of $55 billion, while cautioning that portfolio investments drive much of the inflow. He said the Dangote Refinery accounted for 20 per cent of Nigeria’s exports and described recent changes as early steps towards stability. However, he criticised the government’s communication, saying it treats unwelcome suggestions as attacks and lacks effective spokespersons.
