Tinubu Praises UK Refuge During Nigeria’s Military Era at Windsor Castle
President Bola Tinubu expressed deep gratitude to the United Kingdom for sheltering Nigerian pro-democracy activists during the years of military dictatorship. Speaking at a state banquet hosted by King Charles III on March 18, he recalled that his London residence was placed under Metropolitan Police protection after threats from the junta. Tinubu described returning to the UK as the leader of a democratic Nigeria as deeply humbling. He highlighted how Britain’s support helped sustain Nigeria’s democracy struggle, especially after the annulment of the June 12, 1993 election. He also addressed ongoing regional security challenges linked to Sahel instability and stressed the need for continued UK-Nigeria cooperation. Tinubu looked forward to meeting Prime Minister Keir Starmer and expressed optimism about stronger bilateral ties. His visit marks the first official Nigerian presidential trip to the UK in 37 years.
