NEF Calls for Peace Committees and Security Overhaul Amid Brutal Attacks
The Northern Elders Forum has urged urgent measures to address rising violence in Plateau, Kaduna and Benue states. The Forum described recent killings as brutal and inhumane threats to our society. NEF’s Director of NGOs/CSOs, Abdul-Azeez Suleiman, proposed emergency meetings between traditional leaders, community members and security agencies. He called for peace committees drawn from diverse ethnic and religious groups, along with increased patrols and checkpoints. Suleiman emphasized rebuilding trust between communities and law enforcement through joint training sessions and anonymous reporting channels. He also highlighted the need for humanitarian aid, psychosocial support and vocational programs for displaced persons. The elders warned that these attacks may be coordinated across states. They urged better intelligence sharing and a unified response from security agencies. They stressed that the government must treat this as a national emergency.
