A police accountability controversy has emerged in Orile Iganmu, Lagos, after an 11-year-old girl and an elderly man were reportedly injured by gunfire at a naming ceremony on September 23. MOTION Apapa alleged that police officers arrived at the gathering on Ekunjinmi/Wewe Street at about 8pm and tried to stop the event. The group said gunfire was later discharged, leaving the girl with a leg injury and the man with a reported neck injury. The organisation is demanding an independent investigation, preservation of medical and video evidence, identification of all officers involved, and medical support for the victims. It also urged investigators to establish whether any firearm was discharged lawfully and to verify competing claims about how the injuries occurred.
