Two Killed, Seven Abducted as Gunmen Block Mokwa–New Bussa Road in Niger

Gunmen reportedly blocked the Mokwa–New Bussa Road in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State on Sunday, killing two travellers and abducting seven others. The attack reportedly occurred hours after transport workers suspended a three-day protest over recurring kidnappings and killings along the route. A driver said the first vehicle travelling from Mokwa to New Bussa after the road reopened was intercepted between Ibbi and Felegi. Drivers say attacks on the road have become frequent, with bandits sometimes blocking vehicles and sometimes shooting at moving vehicles. They also said local vigilantes have stopped responding because of inadequate government support. The Niger State Police Command said the road was reopened after military intervention, adding that it had not yet received a report of fresh kidnappings and would provide further details.

Suspending a protest may reduce immediate disruption, but it does not seem to address the insecurity drivers are protesting about.
