Kenneth Okonkwo Says 30-Day Petrol Discount Amounts to Fuel Subsidy
Lawyer and actor Kenneth Okonkwo has argued that the Federal Government’s temporary petrol price reduction is effectively a return to fuel subsidy. Speaking on television, Okonkwo disputed the government’s position that the reduction from about ₦1,500 to ₦1,350 per litre was only a discount. He said the intervention was intended to ease the cost burden on Nigerians, which fits his definition of a subsidy. The Federal Government maintains that the temporary price relief is not a restoration of fuel subsidy. Okonkwo disagrees, arguing that the administration is avoiding the term because it previously ruled out bringing back the policy.
