Nigeria at 66: CACOL Urges Action on Poverty, Corruption and Rising Hardship
The Centre for Anti-Corruption and Open Leadership has called on governments at all levels to take urgent steps to tackle poverty, corruption, insecurity and the rising cost of living as Nigeria marks its 66th Independence Anniversary. The group said independence should be measured by citizens’ access to dignity, security, economic opportunity, social justice and a decent standard of living. It warned that poverty, unemployment, food inflation, weak healthcare, housing shortages and declining purchasing power continue to affect millions of Nigerians. CACOL called for transparent public spending, stronger anti-corruption agencies, recovery of stolen assets and equal enforcement of the law. It also urged government to support food production, affordable housing, healthcare, jobs, education, social protection and security. The organisation further asked authorities to borrow responsibly, invest in productive projects and create better conditions for skilled Nigerians to remain in the country and contribute to national development.
