Two Fishermen Missing After Boat Capsizes Off Bayelsa Coast
Two fishermen are missing after their boat capsized off the coast of Opu-Okumbiri community in Brass Local Government Area, Bayelsa State. The men, identified as Elder Sunday Sample Timothy and his assistant, Mr Avarada, reportedly left for a fishing trip on Friday, July 24, 2026. Their outboard engine developed a fault at sea, and the boat later capsized while another vessel attempted to tow it to safety. Those in the rescue boat returned safely, but the two fishermen have not been found. Community members are searching the coastline and nearby waterways, and have recovered the fishermen's gear. A community leader has called for improved safety equipment and weather-monitoring support for coastal fishing communities as search and rescue efforts continue.
