CJN Warns Lawyers Against Forum Shopping as 2027 Election Cases Loom
Chief Justice of Nigeria Kudirat Kekere-Ekun has warned lawyers against filing political and electoral cases in courts they believe will favour their clients. She said forum shopping can produce conflicting orders, disrupt the judicial process and weaken public confidence in the courts ahead of the 2027 elections. At the opening of the 2026/2027 legal year, the CJN urged counsel to disclose related cases already before other courts and to respect proper jurisdiction. She also told judges to remain impartial and avoid conduct or political associations that could create an appearance of bias. Kekere-Ekun raised concerns about delayed release of funds approved for the judiciary, especially at state level. She said the Supreme Court handled 2,456 matters in the 2025/2026 legal year and delivered 411 judgments, while continuing efforts to clear older and dormant cases from its docket.
