Timaya Defends Fela’s Legacy, Says Afrobeats Owes Him a Great Deal

Timaya has praised the lasting influence of Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti on Nigerian music and its global recognition. Speaking on the Afrobeats Intelligence podcast, the singer said today’s Nigerian artistes benefit from the path Fela created. He argued that Nigerian music may not have gained its present international reach without Fela’s contributions. Timaya said Fela is celebrated beyond Nigeria, including in Cameroon, where he claims the late musician’s work is regularly featured on radio. He added that he would never disrespect Fela or his family.
