Omenka Insists Obasanjo and Yar’Adua’s 1995 Coup Plot Was Real

Omenka Insists Obasanjo and Yar’Adua’s 1995 Coup Plot Was Real

Thirty years on, retired Col. Frank Omenka has broken his silence, insisting the 1995 coup plot against General Sani Abacha was genuine. He spoke during a virtual event organised by The Experiential Leadership in Africa with a major Nigerian news outlet. Omenka, who led military intelligence security operations under Abacha, rejected claims the coup was a phantom. “I investigated it. I know what I saw,” he declared, naming senior officers and recruiters linked to the plot. He recalled the Special Military Tribunal that tried and convicted Chief Obasanjo, Gen. Yar’Adua and others. He defended his methods, denying any torture or physical abuse of detainees during questioning. Omenka said history has judged him unfairly. He urged Nigerians to review evidence and decide for themselves whether the 1995 coup was real or a fabricated pretext.

It's interesting he chose a virtual event with The Experiential Leadership in Africa rather than a traditional press conference.

I'm not entirely convinced the plot was as organised as described; memories and records from that era remain murky.

Perhaps a joint panel of military experts and journalists could examine any surviving testimonies to clarify what really happened in 1995.
