2027: Can South-East Electoral Strength Shape the Next Igbo Presidency Debate?
Nigeria’s South-East faces a major political test ahead of the 2027 presidential election. In 2023, Peter Obi won all five states in the region, while the APC and PDP struggled to secure significant support there. The political picture is now more complex. Imo, Ebonyi and Enugu have APC governors, while Anambra Governor Chukwuma Soludo has backed President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid. Abia Governor Alex Otti has not endorsed Tinubu, but has said he is not in a position to oppose his candidacy. The key question is whether these elite alignments can translate into votes. A stronger APC showing in the South-East could give regional leaders greater influence in future zoning and power-sharing talks. But if Obi again dominates the region, it may raise questions about the grassroots relevance of politicians backing the ruling party. A South-East presidential bid will ultimately require more than regional support or a party ticket. It will depend on building electoral alliances across Nigeria and winning a national election.
