Lagos Street Raids Raise Concerns Over Minors Transported in Enforcement Vans
A viral video and eyewitness accounts have renewed concerns about how Lagos authorities transport street beggars, including children and teenagers, during enforcement raids. In previous operations in Oshodi, Agege and CMS, officials said dozens of beggars were apprehended and taken away in enclosed green enforcement vans. Lagos authorities say those arrested are profiled and may be referred for rehabilitation, prosecution or return to their home states. The Nigerian Correctional Service says it does not admit minors into adult custodial centres and that juveniles should be taken to a borstal institution where necessary. However, traders and other residents say the sight of overcrowded vans carrying young people is troubling. The Lagos Taskforce has denied that the vehicle observed was one of its vans, noting that several enforcement and security agencies use similar vehicles.
