Atiku Seeks Probe Into 37 Niger Miners’ Deaths, Pledges Education Support for Boy

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has called for an explanation over the deaths of 37 suspected illegal miners reportedly held by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps in Niger State. Reacting to a video of Yusuf Aliyu, a young boy whose living conditions drew concern, Atiku said children in mineral-rich communities deserve access to education, safety and economic opportunity. He pledged to support Yusuf’s schooling through his family and appropriate child-protection channels. Atiku criticised the Federal Government’s approach to artisanal mining and asked what had become of interventions under the Presidential Artisanal Gold Mining Development Initiative in Niger State. He argued that mineral wealth should fund classrooms and livelihoods rather than deepen poverty in host communities.
