APC Secretariat Abandoned Amid Fallout from Turbulent Primaries
The APC’s national secretariat in Abuja has remained eerily deserted since the conclusion of its primaries. Deep divisions over candidate selection have driven top officials to operate from hotels and undisclosed locations. A wave of disputed results, mass appeals and protests followed the party’s deadline to submit candidates to INEC. Several governors and aspirants were left aggrieved by disqualifications and substitutions that insiders say were driven by power struggles within the party. Critics argue the APC set a trap with its amended Electoral Act and consensus/direct primary rules, only to fall into it themselves. Party leaders insist the appeal process is legitimate and that only a small fraction of nominations were altered. With many founding members feeling betrayed, observers warn the bitterness may shape voter behaviour in next year’s general election.
