Chike-Obi Calls Atiku’s Plan to Restore Petrol Subsidy ‘Naive’

Mustafa Chike-Obi has criticised Atiku Abubakar’s proposal to restore petrol subsidy if elected president in 2027. He argued that selling crude oil below its market value to support cheaper petrol would consume a major share of Nigeria’s foreign-exchange earnings. Atiku had said the subsidy should return, arguing that the Tinubu administration has not explained how savings from its removal have been used. Chike-Obi said a broad subsidy regime would also encourage cross-border smuggling and require costly government monitoring and price controls. He proposed targeted vouchers for low-income Nigerians as a better, though imperfect, form of support. Ken Ikpe also backed the current approach, saying policies should be improved over time rather than abandoned.
