Tinubu Set to Address UN General Assembly in New York on September 23

President Bola Tinubu is expected to address the 81st United Nations General Assembly debate in New York on September 23, 2026. He is listed as the 10th speaker during the morning session, with his address expected between 4:30pm and 5:00pm Nigerian time. The President is also scheduled to attend meetings and side events on climate action, sea-level rise, pandemic preparedness and regional security. He is expected to meet UN Secretary-General António Guterres and Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed. Nigeria plans to seek international support for stronger border policing across West Africa, citing porous borders as a major security concern. Tinubu may also hold talks with US President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the assembly. Tinubu last attended the UN General Assembly in person in 2023, while Vice-President Kashim Shettima represented Nigeria at the 2024 and 2025 sessions.
