Trump Faces Midterm Test as Democrats Target Control of Congress
Americans are voting in the 2026 midterm elections, with President Donald Trump’s Republican Party facing pressure over the cost of living, the war with Iran and voter dissatisfaction. Democrats are hoping to win control of one or both chambers of Congress, which could constrain Trump’s legislative agenda for the rest of his presidency. Polling cited by CNN gave Democrats a nine-point lead in the generic congressional ballot. Separate polling showed Democrats ahead in five closely watched Senate races. Republicans have campaigned to protect their Senate majority, while redistricting and efforts to mobilise supporters are part of their strategy. Economic concerns may be affecting voter choices, including among Latino voters who backed Trump in significant numbers in 2024. In Texas, early-voting data showed a sharp increase in Latino participation compared with 2022. Analysts pointed to the economy, immigration enforcement and confidence in the administration as possible factors. Election security is also in focus. The US Justice Department plans to deploy about 1,000 monitors across all 50 states to observe for possible violations of federal voting laws. A Democratic takeover of either chamber would not remove Trump from office, but could make it harder for him to pass legislation and approve spending.
