Tinubu’s Europe Trip Raises Questions About Cost, Priorities and Leadership
I am glad President Bola Tinubu returned from Europe saying he is healthy and ready to work. Still, a president’s extended trip cannot be treated as a purely private holiday when Nigerians are facing food insecurity, public debt and worsening security concerns. While he was away, reports highlighted kidnappings, bandit attacks and the deaths of detained suspected illegal miners in Minna. His absence from the UN General Assembly also renewed questions about why Vice President Kashim Shettima has delivered Nigeria’s address for three consecutive years. Nigeria’s UN message called for fairer financing and debt relief, but I believe the country needs to project clearer proposals and stronger leadership on the global stage. Kenya’s presentation, including its focus on African representation and development opportunities, made that contrast more noticeable. Tinubu’s close diplomatic relationship with French President Emmanuel Macron has also drawn attention. The real question is not whether the President enjoyed his time abroad, but what concrete benefits these repeated visits bring to Nigerians at home.
