Julius Caesar Felt Behind at His Age — Even After All He Had Achieved
I keep thinking about an account from Plutarch’s biography of Julius Caesar. While in Spain, Caesar read about Alexander the Great and reportedly wept. He felt Alexander had achieved far more by the same age, while he himself had done nothing worth remembering. It is striking because Caesar later became one of history’s most influential rulers. His name inspired titles such as Kaiser and Tsar, and July bears his name. Yet he still felt like he was late in life. The comparison never really ends. We may think money, status or a major milestone will silence the feeling of being behind, but there is always someone further up the ladder. Who are you measuring yourself against, and did reaching a milestone you once envied actually end that feeling?
